The Yoga for Older Grownups Teacher Training will go beyond teaching set sequences and modifications by empowering yoga teachers to synthesize knowledge of the aging process, common health conditions, injuries, and health promotion best practice to confidently and safely support older individuals in their classes.   Course Content:   * Principles of how to teach a safe, fun, empowering yoga and movement class to older grownups and seniors.  * An overview of the normal aging process and the concept of healthy aging.  * Principles of effective health promotion programs for older adults  * Common conditions such as osteoporosis, arthritis, joint replacement, rotator cuff, frozen shoulder, anxiety and depression.  * An understanding of the impact of aging and health conditions on an older person's mobility, daily function and participation in life and in yoga class.  * Principles of adaptation, modification and prop use for safety and to empower older students.  * Evidence based sequences for older grownups and seniors.  * Use of evidence based assessments to document functional outcomes.  * Yoga teacher's scope of practice and the ethics of teaching older students.   Course Structure:   * Yoga for Seniors and Older Grownups is a 21 hour training run over three days.  * Each half of each day begins with a led sequence, followed by discussion of theory and practical training  * Practice teaching and programming in partners or small groups. This course is about understanding mental health from a yogic framework and from the framework of recovery, it is about understanding how yoga works on a scientific and experiential level, and it is about knowing how to create a safe, ethically responsible, trauma informed environment in which to offer yoga.    Course Content:   * The Yoga for Mental Health Teacher Training is designed to educate and support yoga teachers to offer classes that train resilience, self-regulation and self-empowerment through yoga. In a safe environment, with a supportive teacher, yoga is a means of finding and cultivating a positive healthy relationship with ourselves.  * The concept of Recovery in mental health and the Yogic framework for mental health  * Scientific explanation of how yoga supports mental health  * Bottom up versus Top Down approaches are explained and explored in practice  * Evidence based approaches and practices which support resilience, recovery and self-regulation.  * Important contraindications and guidelines for anxiety and depression.  * A definition and explanation of trauma informed care (this training does not focus exclusively on trauma sensitive yoga) and how to implement it in practice.  * Each of the three days will have time for theory, practical training, reflection, and discussion.
